Thomas G. McCarty, Ph.D., CFRE
With over 30 years of fundraising experience, Tom McCarty has previously served non-profit organizations—as a staff member, consultant, and independent contractor—throughout the Eastern United States and beyond. His long and successful career encompasses 17 capital campaigns, solicitation of 6- and 7-figure major and planned gifts, grants ranging as high as $3.5 million, and a total of over $60 million raised personally.
Tom is extremely active in his profession also. His service includes memberships and officer positions in the Central Florida, Western New York, and Central Virginia chapters of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP); the AFP Virginia Fundraising Caucus; the Grant Professionals Association; and the Virginia Fund Raising Institute. He also served as a charter member and President of the Central Florida Chapter of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (founded as the National Planned Giving Council).
Tom began his career as a college professor of Classics for institutions of higher education Vermont, Ohio, and North Carolina. He is a graduate of Oberlin College, with advanced degrees from Yale University (M.A.T.) and The University of Michigan (Ph.D.) Tom also holds current CFRE accreditation (Certified Fund Raising Executive) from CFRE International.
Tom has also worked as a Campaign Director for the Bentz Group (formerly known as Charles H. Benz Associates), a national consulting firm. Currently, he heads his own consulting practice and is professionally affiliated with several consulting firms, noted on his résumé.
Personally, Tom is married to the former Marilyn King. They have two grown sons, Gordon and Glenn, and live in Central Virginia with their three cats.
